Frequently Asked Questions

At Daniel J Mellor Independent Funeral Directors, we understand that planning a funeral can be overwhelming, and you may have many questions. Here, we address some of the most common inquiries to guide you through the process
What Are Doctor's Forms?
For cremations, a doctormust certify the death. Typically, this includes the attending physician who cared for the deceased during their final illness. Where appropriate, we manage these associated costs on behalf of the family to ensure all legal requirements are fulfilled.
How Many People Can Be Seated in a Limousine?
Our limousines can comfortably seat up to 7 people in the rear compartment, with an additional seat available for the chauffeur in the front.
How Do We Know What to Do at the Funeral?
On the day of the funeral, our experienced Funeral Director will be there to guide and assist you, your family, and friends. Feel free to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have.
Can the Family Carry the Coffin?
Yes, the family can choose to carry the coffin. Please inform us in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements for a safe and respectful transport. Alternatively, a wheeled bier can be used for a dignified entrance into the chapel.
Can We Visit the Deceased and Pay Our Last Respects?
Our Funeral Home is open for visitation at your convenience. If you wish to visit our private chapel, please let us know in advance so we can arrange for a staff member to assist you.
Can We Have the Deceased Brought Home?
Yes, we can arrange for the deceased to be brought home either before the service or on the morning of the service, according to your wishes.
Can We Choose What Music Is Played at the Crematorium?
Absolutely. You may request specific music for the entry or exit at the Crematorium Chapel. Due to copyright laws, please provide original recordings or family recordings. We ask that music selections be finalised at least 48 hours before the funeral.
Can We Request Donations to Charity?
Yes, if you prefer charitable donations in lieu of flowers, we can manage the collection and forwarding of these donations to your chosen charity on your behalf.
Does the Coffin Move After the Funeral Service at the Crematorium?
No, the coffin remains in place until all attendees have left the Crematorium Chapel. In some cases, curtains may close over the coffin upon request.
Is Each Cremation Carried Out Individually?
Yes, each cremation is performed individually, following strict procedures to ensure proper identification and care.
Do I Get the Cremated Remains That Belong to Me?
Yes, after the cremation, the remains are placed in a temporary container with clear identification. We can assist with transferring these remains to a permanent urn or casket if required.
What Can I Do with the Cremated Remains?
You have several options for the cremated remains, including placing them in a Garden of Remembrance, interring them in a grave, keeping them in a special urn at home, scattering them in a meaningful location, or burying/scattering them on an existing family grave (subject to regulations). Please contact us for further details on these options.
What About Catering After the Funeral?
You can choose to arrange catering independently, book a venue through us, or opt for our outside catering service at your chosen location.
How Soon After a Burial Can I Place a Headstone on the Grave?
The timing for placing a headstone varies. Earth graves generally require up to six months for settlement before a headstone can be safely installed. Raft plots allow for immediate placement.
What Happens with a Headstone Removal?
If a headstone needs to be removed for a burial, we can coordinate this service with a qualified stone mason.
