The day of a funeral is a deeply significant and emotional time
At Daniel J Mellor Independent Funeral Directors, we are committed to ensuring that everything runs smoothly, allowing you and your family to focus on saying goodbye. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you understand what to expect on the day of the funeral.
Step 1: Arrival at the Home or Meeting Place
On the day of the funeral, our team will arrive at your home or designated meeting place at the agreed-upon time. This may be your home, the home of the deceased, or another meaningful location. If the family wishes, a traditional paging from the home of the deceased can be arranged, where the funeral director will lead the cortege on foot for a short distance as a mark of respect.
Step 2: The Funeral Procession
The funeral procession is an integral part of the day. The hearse, followed by any family limousines, will travel to the service venue. This journey can be a solemn and reflective time, often taking a route that passes by places of significance to the deceased. Family and friends who wish to follow in their own vehicles are welcome to join the procession. We will ensure that the route and timing are carefully planned and communicated to all involved.
Step 3: Arrival at the Venue
Upon arrival at the venue—whether it be a church, crematorium, or other location—our team will guide you through the next steps. The pallbearers, who may be family members, friends, or our staff, will carefully carry the coffin into the venue. If you have chosen to include any special tributes, such as flowers or personal items, these will be displayed as arranged.
Step 4: The Funeral Service
On the day of the funeral, our team will arrive at your home or designated meeting place at the agreed-upon time. This may be your home, the home of the deceased, or another meaningful location. If the family wishes, a traditional paging from the home of the deceased can be arranged, where the funeral director will lead the cortege on foot for a short distance as a mark of respect.
Step 5: The Committal
Following the service, the committal takes place. If the funeral is a burial, this will occur at the graveside, where the coffin is lowered into the ground. If it is a cremation, the committal may be held at the crematorium or another chosen location. During this time, it is common for final words or prayers to be spoken, and for family members to place flowers or earth on the coffin as a final farewell. Our team will be on hand to support you during this emotional moment.
Step 6: Leaving the Venue
After the committal, guests will be invited to leave the venue. Our team will coordinate the departure to ensure it is done respectfully and efficiently. Family members may wish to greet attendees or receive condolences outside the venue. This is also a time when any floral tributes can be viewed.
Step 7: The Wake or Reception
Many families choose to hold a wake or reception following the funeral service. This gathering provides an opportunity for family and friends to come together, share memories, and offer support to one another. Whether held at a local venue, a family home, or another special location, we can assist in planning and organising this part of the day to ensure it is a fitting tribute.
Step 8: After the Funeral
In the days following the funeral, there may be additional considerations such as collecting ashes from the crematorium, sending thank-you notes, or planning a memorial. Our team at Daniel J Mellor Funeral Director is here to provide continued support and guidance during this time. We can also offer advice on bereavement support services if needed.
